as tonniwan mentioned, using a constant current source is a way to improve performance and efficiency.
Another approach mentioned earlier is to use a power transformer as load.
Nelson experiemented the following.
it is essentiall a differential pair. the load is a DC-balanced power transformer. the lower portion can be eliminated to just use a small power resistor (R6).
I have built the actual circuit, with a 2*110v / 9v power transformer. the sound is excellent.
if you don't mind a little bit less power, you can get rid of the other half and run the amp single ended, like in the follow chart.
with a (step-down) power transformer, you can reduce the idle current, and get 2x of the voltage swings. |
